Note: We advise that you record your original DNS settings before you set-up Safesurfer.
This ensures you can restore the original settings when you want to remove Safesurfer.
Don’t know what your original settings were? No problem. Just contact your internet provider and they can will provide their standard DNS settings.
Will Safesurfer block stuff it’s not supposed too? Or slow my internet connection?
For example Safesurfer would not block an article about the dangers of pornography from a newspaper site. We block based on information in the domain name.
DO I STILL NEED ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE IF SAFESURFER IS ‘SWITCHED ON’?
Yes. We recommend all devices have up to date security software installed. Safesurfer will also provide an extra line of defense by blocking:
● Known hacked or infected websites
● Websites about hacking, dark web, and other illegal activity
CAN I GET REPORTS IF SOMEONE AT MY HOUSE TRIES TO ACCESS BLOCKED CONTENT?
Safesurfer does not provide any reporting facilities on blocked content. Our aim is to block harmful content so your family won’t be exposed to any content they shouldn’t be. Whether they specifically search for it or accidentally stumble upon it.
What content does Safesurfer block and how?
– Adult content
– Suicide and self-harm sites
– Viruses (note: you also need up to date security/anti-virus software installed)
– Phishing sites
It blocks the content by filtering the domain names and IP addresses of websites. It uses a DNS server that has been set up, and is continually maintained, with comprehensive filtering and security features.
Websites are blocked based on their domain name not keywords within the site.
No technology can currently 100% stop harmful content, but Safesurfer stops mainstream sites where kids surf most.
